In this issue, we’re focusing on several artists because you need to know about them and also, cake is art, duh!

I quite enjoyed reading this post on Instagram by The School of Life London (above) and obviously, it was quite appropriate for this issue so I thought I’d share with y’all. Wayne Thiebaud also happens to be my favorite artist.

Now if you’re familiar with Wayne Thiebaud’s work at all, you’ll have seen some of his famous cake paintings. (Food wasn’t his only focal point but certainly some of the most iconic.) The image above however, is not the work of Wayne Thiebaud. It is in fact, the work of Sharon Core, an artist and photographer who painstakingly reproduced several of Thiebaud’s paintings IRL, and consequently photographed them. (And yes, by reproduce I mean she baked these cakes and frosted them too.) Not gonna lie, when I first saw this image along with a few others come up in a “Thiebaud” Google search, I just thought it was some sort of restored version as it’s slightly clearer” and more “vibrant” than other pieces by Thiebaud. . . only to realize that this was the work of an entirely different artist. Enter Sharon Core.
Sharon Core, ”Thiebauds – Pies, Pies, Pies” (2003) || see the Wayne Thiebaud version HERE You can read more about Sharon Core and just how cerebral her work is in a great piece called “A Poetics of Appropriation: On Sharon Core” written by Donna Stonecipher for Hyperallergic. This piece does a wonderful job of addressing the questions that Core’s work invites us to ask like “How many “lives” does a still life have?”, the role of technology in art and consequently for women, “original” content vs. a “copy” of it, and more. Core’s work deserves recognition whether it be for the sheer impressiveness of the hard work involved and consequently the aesthetics or the thought-provoking discourse it elicits.

Do you know about Wedding Cake built by Portuguese artist, Joana Vasconcelos on the ground of Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire back in 2023? Stuff of dreams. Learn more about it in the short video below:
